Dance in SchoolsSchoolsJubilation at The Marlborough Centre
Written by TRS Teacher, Georgia
To celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, The Marlborough Centre provided a dance workshop for every child in the school.. and what a fantastic day we had! When arriving at the school, I was greeted by Her Majesty herself and of course we had to partake in a quick selfie together.
Ahead of the workshops, we arranged for each class to make a streamer of some kind to bring to their dance workshop to use. They had some wonderful ideas and their imagination was the only limit! I was so excited to see what they would have come up with.
We chose a lovely picture of the Queen and put her high up on the wall so she could see us dancing from Buckingham Palace balcony and started each session by practicing our Queens wave to her. We always start our dance classes together with a well known action song so each class start with a jolly verse of ‘If your happy and you know it’ and we clapped, waved and stamped our feet to get us all in the mood to celebrate!
For our warm up we toured to all of the Queen’s different castles and palaces! We marched and waved our flags and when the music stopped, we ran to a castle and put our flag on top! We visited Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Balmoral Castle. And of course every time we passed our picture of the Queen, we did the royal Queen wave!
So that The Queen could see us from her balcony, we used a giant flag to create a group dance. We all held on to the flag and created a dance to Dancing Queen by Abba. Our movements included having tea with the Queen, flying like the Red Arrows and even looking underneath for those naughty Corgis!
But then disaster struck…
We were all so excited because the Queen herself had given me some of the Crown Jewels in a black box to bring to show everyone, we had talked about what colour they were and even counted down together to open the box in much anticipation and when we did it was empty! I shook the box, turned it up side down and patted the bottom but it was definitely empty! I said I have definitely seen them today so they must be in the room! To give us some luck we put on the song ‘Gold’ by Spandau Ballet and started the search! Thankfully all were found and put safely back in the box. We decided that it was another thing to celebrate at our street party that was coming next!
It was time to see all those fabulous streamers!
I was so impressed by everyone’s streamers, they were really imaginative and I loved that some of them used recycled goods too. We had some made from milk cartons, some made from curtain rings and ribbon, and some with beautifully decorated crete paper. We learned some movements and created some together and then danced and danced and danced in a true party atmosphere to the song ‘Celebration’. The streamers were the perfect addition and create a sea of red, white and blue.
After our party, we had a lovely restful time chilling out on the floor with the lights dimmed, calm music and bubbles floating around us for us to gently pop. We took some lovely deep breaths and thanked each other for coming to celebrate with us with a round of applause.
It was such a special day filled with excitement, learning, dancing, flag waving and most importantly, lots of smiles. A true Jubilation.
